CoverGirl LipPerfection Lipstick

You’ve likely seen the commercials for CoverGirl’s LipPerfection promoting 7 days to soft, beautiful lips (vs. bare lips.)

This lipstick goes on silky smooth, and is not overly thick or sticky. It has an angled tip, and glides on well.  We should know.  We literally tried eight different shades between us Glambo Girls.

For a review, we personally test a product for a  week, minimum. Because we have different skin tones, we try a broad range of shades. We kept purchasing LipPerfection Lipsticks simply because the color goes on more vibrant than the depiction shown on the bottom of the tube. It wears brighter than what you would expect from looking at the actual lipstick, and we were searching for our personal neutral that we could wear daily.

We laughed when the pinky/purple shades wore off as though we had been licking a lollipop. These vibrant lipsticks will get you noticed! We independently noted a few extra stares from men after applying LipPerfection. Our suspicions were confirmed when we starting hearing comments like, “Wow! You look really great. Did you change your make-up?” from guys we know. Then, a girlfriend saw one of us wearing #350 Euphoria (which looked slightly red) and said “Ohhh who do you have that lipstick on for?”

The color lasts! This surprised us because other creamy lipsticks don’t always have staying power. We even prefer it over CoverGirl’s Outlast Lipstain. Some of us are sensitive to the flavor of a lipstick, and can say that this one is acceptable. #385 Feline wears brighter than the color on the tube, but is pretty. #345 Everlasting turned out to be a glittery red, yet we didn’t see glitter in the tube and it wasn’t described that way on the packaging. It was like Dorothy‘s little red shoe for your lips. #265 Romance ended up being a nice neutral for lighter skin. #235 Ferver and #295 Rich were our favorites as a raisin color for tan skin. (Beware: The colors shown online are not even close to the actual shade on the lips.)

After seven days, our lips were soft. We continue to use our favorites of the bunch. If you want to try CoverGirl LipPerfection, shop wisely to find your ideal shade of this outgoing lip color. Be prepared to try a few, and know that you will get positive attention from every ‘off, bright, and crazy’ shade that you apply.

OPI Black Shatter vs. Silver Shatter: See the Difference HERE!

If you are new to shatter polishes, or have tried the black and want to apply the silver, here is all the information you will need to know:

OPI Black Shatter is part of the Katy Perry Collection. (Click Here to see Glambo's review.) It came out in early 2011 and was an instant hit! Stores sold out of their supply immediately and were backordered for weeks. Silver Shatter is from OPI’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides collection. It was released May 1st, and is also proving difficult to capture. Although both colors ‘shatter,’ there are differences in the application technique to acheive the optimal effect.

Pictured here:
Black Shatter over silver nail polish (left), and Silver Shatter over black nail polish(right).

Black Shatter should be applied with very thin strokes: The thinner the better to for the most crackled effect. Black Shatter has a matte finish, and top coat is necessary to add some shine. The Black Shatter gives nails a leather-like feel. When it chips (as all manicures eventually do,) it will come off in chunks along the crackle lines.

For those that think Black Shatter polish makes your nails look goth, then Silver Shatter will give a futuristic impression. The Silver Shatter polish is thinner. It appears to have a clear base that is infused with silver shimmer. Unlike the Black Shatter, thicker application strokes are necessary to get the most shattered look. The Silver Shatter does seem to take longer to break apart than the black. You may also get ‘glitter cuticles’ when first applying Silver Shatter. It’s happened to us several times, and is easy to clean up with polish remover. It wears well, and due to the lighter color, is less noticeable when it chips.

CLICK HERE to view OPI's Video "How to Apply Silver Shatter."

With both polishes:

  • Do NOT go over the same area twice. That spot will not crackle if you do.
  • Use a top coat once the shatter polish has dried. A three minute wait time is suggested.
  • Crackle polishes do not shatter as well over a glittery base color. Keep that in mind when you are selecting a color to show through your shatter.
  • Due to the drying effect of the shatter, keep the bottle covered as much as possible.
  • You can touch up the tips of your nails when the polish eventually chips. That will extend the wear of your manicure for a few more days.
  • Both polishes will get you noticed! Don’t be surprised if complete strangers comment on your nails.
Personally, the Glambo Girls prefer contrast between the base color and the shatter. One of our favorite combinations is OPI Black Shatter over white.

The Pirates of the Caribbean colors are light and muted, but we love the silver shatter over brighter, darker shades. To see Silver Shatter over POTC shades, CLICK HERE. (Note the pale, Steady as She Rose. The camera picked up more contrast than you initially notice with the naked eye.)

More shatter colors are coming from OPI. Expect to see white, navy, turquoise, blue and red on the beauty supply shelves soon.

3 Simple Steps to a Brighter Smile

If you are currently on trend wearing orange lipsticks, you may have noticed that your teeth appear a shade or two darker than usual. It’s a fact that pinker lips make teeth look whiter, while orange hues bring out yellow tones.

If you are not already doing these three things daily then it’s time to brighten up. If you need a major whitening, then we have all the info, including cost comparisons, linked at the bottom.

1) Use an electric toothbrush. If you don’t have one that emits sonic vibrations, then it’s time to invest. They have come down in price in recent years. Dentist recommend them for oral health anyway, and an added benefit is that the will help lighten your teeth after just a couple of weeks of use. (I notice the difference when I travel with an old-fashioned manual style toothbrush and can’t wait to get back home to my Sonicare.)

2) Use a whitening toothpaste. It’s worth the extra dollar per tube because using the right one really does make a difference. I’m a Crest girl, so I use Crest 3D White and give it a Glambo Kiss of Approval. (According to Crest, “New Crest 3D White Advanced Vivid Enamel Renewal Toothpaste removes up to 90% of surface stains in just 14 days while strengthening your enamel.”)

3) FLOSS! Statistics show that approximately 73% of Americans would rather go grocery shopping than floss. In fact, only 28% are estimated to floss daily. This is a mistake. Flossing is imperative for dental health, and it helps prevents stains on the teeth. Plus, it is the key to fresher breath for that pucker up smile. To make flossing easier, try Oral B Satin Floss or Glide brands.

(To the source of our statistics and other fun dental facts, click here.)

If you are considering whitening strips or a trip to the dentist for professional trays or Zoom, this article from WalletPop is a good overview of the procedures and their costs here.

Follow these tips, and you'll have a beautiful white smile to accentuate those luscious lips adorned by the perfect lipstick.

L'OREAL Sublime Mousse Hair Color

We like the idea of a foam hair color that you can apply in front of the mirror, work through your hair and rinse out like shampoo. (Just remember to wear a button-up top first.) L'oreal’s Sublime Mousse box contains the three basic tubes you would normally see with at-home hair color, plus a pump-top applicator. You pour bottle 1 into bottle 2 screw on the foam dispensing applicator.

DO NOT SHAKE the product. Roll it to mix it together. I didn’t see that in the instructions at first. The directions also state that you should pump the product into your hands and not directly onto the hair. This also went against my natural instincts, especially since I prefer to apply color to the roots first. Pumping product into the hands was an easy adjustment, and it also gave me the opportunity to try the ‘upside-down’ test. I put the mousse in my hand and flipped it over like the commercial. I did this quickly because I was a big chicken, but it didn’t drip! Kudos to L'oreal for that! The product goes on easily without spattering. They say to pump the bottle one time before the initial application, but we didn’t have any issues with our first pump. The mixed product will darken in the bottle throughout the process, which is normal for most hair colors.

Mousse - also includes gloves
The mousse formula provides thorough saturation for even distribution of the color, and there was an ample amount of product to cover longer hair. We like that Loreal Sublime Mousse had a lower odor than some hair color products, and even provided a slightly fruity smell. The applicator worked well all the way through to the last pump. Keep the bottle straight to dispense the foam even when it appears there isn’t a lot left in the bottle. This is much better than shaking a bottle to get out the last dregs of product to apply to your hair. (See Glambo's assessment of Clairol Nice N Easy Foam to compare.)

The box boasts 100% grey coverage in 30 minutes. I am used to leaving the product on longer for resistant grey hair. We used L'oreal Sublime Mousse twice; once on our greyest hair model, and the second time I applied it to my own hair (which I will disclose I absolutely hate doing because of the mess.) For our grey /white hair model, we left it on exactly 30 minutes. It covered well, but the color on the white hair wasn’t as dark as the rest of the previously treated hair - even with doing the roots first. It did blend, and I would give it a 7 out of a 10 for coverage that time. The second go-around, we left it on a little longer on the grey roots (although the box does not say to do that.) The color blended, but was still a little lighter than the previously colored sections. It completely covered the highlights in the hair though. L'oreal Sublime Mousse is an excellent option for people that are just beginning to color their hair at home, or hate that simply detest the mess.

Bridesmaids Movie

May is here and the summer wedding season is officially upon us. We saw the Bridesmaids movie trailer months ago, and can't wait to see it in theaters. You may recognize a lot of the actresses: Kristin Wiig from SNL (who also co-wrote the film,) the very funny Wendi McLendon-Covey of Reno 911 fame, and Melissa McCarthy who you may know from Gilmore Girls and Mike & Molly. McCarthy plays Megan in this flick, and all we can say is, "What a difference make-up makes!" For anyone that's ever had to dawn an unflattering bridesmaid dress in front of hundreds of wedding guests, this movie is for you!

Tell us what you think. Do you want to see this movie? Bridesmaids is rated R and is in theaters May 13, 2011.

OPI Silver Shatter with Pirates of the Caribbean Colors

The Glambo Girls have captured the elusive Silver Shatter by OPI. It is part of the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides collection, which also includes the colors:

OPI Silver Shatter over
Sparrow Me the Drama
Planks A Lot, Mermaids Tears, Stranger Tides, Skull & Glossbones, and the two we tried:

Sparrow Me the Drama and Steady as She Rose.

OPI, POC Steady as She Rose
with Silver Shatter
We feel fortunate to get our Silver Shatter supply since it appears to be a challenge to acquire like it’s cousin, Black Shatter of the OPI Katy Perry collection. The Silver Shatter is a littler darker than we had expected from the ads, but we like it. When you open the bottle, the polish itself appears as a clear base infused silver shimmer. The color leans more toward a charcoal hue instead of a super light grayish glitter. We found the silver shatter works best with heavy brush application and few strokes. If you go back over an area, it will be covered in silver glitter and not crackle on that spot. It does take a while for the silver to break apart. We preferred a darker base color, like the Sparrow Me the Drama because it gives more contrast to the silver, and you can see the shatter effect better.

After wearing OPI Silver Shatter for a week, the polish does hold up well with minimal chipping. (Nails can easily be touched up to extend a manicure, thanks to the shatter effect.)

More OPI Silver Shatter posts will follow, so check back with us here on our blog and on Facebook.
